In January of 1978 Metro shut down their trolley coach system for line renewal and expansion. The Original 1940s era Trolley coaches along with the infrastructure was worn out. During the renewal Metro purchased 109 AM General Trolley coaches in a joint order with Philadelphia. They were equipped with modern Randtronics Chopper Controls, and General Electric 1213J5 Traction motors. After the first 30 coaches were delivered with unsuccessful TD&T wheelchair lifts, the remaining 79 coaches were delivered with standard front steps. Later all 109 received Lift-U platform style wheelchair lifts. 

The AMGenerals were phased out in 2002 and 2003 when the last revenue service AMGeneral Trolley coach #999 pulled into Atlantic base at about 2:50 PM on Thursday, March 27th 2003 ending 24 years of service. The bus was on the 10/12 route run #8. After retirement from service, Metro personnel stripped their propulsion packages (Controller, Traction Motor and Card Cage) were removed and sent to Alstom for refurbishment and than re-installed into the new Gillig Trolleys. The Metro Employee's Historic Vehicle Association has restored coach 1008 to its original as-delivered confutation and paint scheme.
