Throughout the late 1970s and 1980s King County Metro bought several generations
of coaches from M*A*N AG
(Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nürnberg) of Germany. The first order of these
coaches, the 1979 SG-220-18-2's were finished by AM General. The rest of the
buses were finished in the United states by MAN in a plant in N. Carolina until
it closed sometime in the late 1980s. MAN still produces buses in Europe, and
more information can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MAN_AG_Buses
These coaches are unique in the fact, that all the motor coaches featured variants
of the MAN D2566 engine, the Articulated coaches having the D2566 MLUM, and the
Americanas the D2566 MLUH. They all had Renk-Doromat (another MAN group company)
874B Automatic transmissions. The 1400 series had highway gearing, while the
rest of them were geared for city use with a top speed around 55 M.P.H. All
coaches featured wide double stream doors for easy loading.
