Pierce Transit has had 2 five year Sole-source contracts with New Flyer to
produce 30ft and 40ft Low Floor CNG transit buses.
There are so far 3 contracts for New Flyer Coaches, The first contract was
signed in 1997, and first order of these coaches replaced the Gillig Phantoms,
Eldorado MST's and GMC T6H-4523Ns. The GMCs were in the reserve fleet however
due to late delivery by NewFlyer they were put back into service. The prototype
showed up in March of 1998, with the production units in October through
December of that year. The Second order arrived in September of 2000, with
Balious signs instead of the Luminators ordered prior. These were later
converted to Twin Vision signs in late 2003 and early 2004. The final order of
these coaches arrive around December of 2001, and the first four were put into
service on 1-15-02. They all had variants of the Cummins C8.3 engine fueled by
CNG, with the last of that order being delivered with a Cummins-Westport
modification called the C+. They all had Allison B400R transmissions and Meritor
axles.
In 2002, Realizing that they needed smaller coaches, bid was put out for 30ft
transit coaches, New Flyer got the contract and has to-date supplied 30 C30LF
coaches, with the Cummins-Westport C+ engine, ZF6HP592 Economat II Transmission
and MAN Axles. These coaches were delivered in February and March of 2004, and
Put into service in April of that year, these coaches replaced many of the
remaining diesel Orion's (420, 22, 24, 26, 27, 29, 459-472). A second order was
delivered in 2005, and these along with some 40ft coaches off the second
contract retired most of the CNG Orions (444-458, 473-481).
The Second Contract for 40ft coaches was signed in 2003, with the first
coaches showing up in 2004. These Coaches, like the 30ft coaches ordered before
them had the Cummins-Westport C+ rated at 350 H.P. and ZF6HP592 Economat II
transmissions. The first ten of theses The 2006 order specified the Voith
D863.3 Transmission in place of the ZF, and all coaches from this contract have
MAN axles. Also, coaches 230-239 have the New Styling package offered by
NewFlyer, and feature new front and rear caps along with the frameless window
option.
Coaches 101-184 were bought off the first contract, which ran from 1997-2002.
These buses and have either Cummins C8.3, or the Cummins Westport C+
engine. Coaches with the Cummins C8.3 are being upgraded to Cummins-Westport
engines as needed. These buses have the Allison B400R transmission with Meritor
Axles. Coaches 185-229 were bought off the second 40ft contract which runs until
2007, and have the same Cummins-Westport C+ engine, a ZF6HP590 transmission and
MAN axles. Coach 192 features a prototype ISL-G Engine.
There is also a contract with New Flyer for 30ft Low Floor CNG transit buses.
This contract will expire in 2008, so far 30 coaches have been bought and have
the Cummins-Westport C+ engine, ZF6HP590 transmission, and MAN axles.
